A little history

Created in 1853 from Grimes, Leon, and Walker counties; named for President James Madison. Madisonville sits on the old San Antonio Road (El Camino Real) and is known as the Mushroom Capital of Texas. The Woodbine and Buda formations cross the county; mineral severance is heavy in the historical Spanish-grant tracts.
